Saw this 'new improved' version on it's second day, a matinee. Why mess with perfection?ĬHEAP CHICAGO RUN VERSION OF "PHANTOM" WHY CHEAP? I am obviously a huge fan of the show, but would not ever return to see this production. Why was the Phantom all over the floor? The songs were rushed and nothing felt believable. There was none of the pain that was evident with former Phantoms. There was none of the Phantom wanting to make Christine his bride, no final scene in the chair. I missed the Phantom atop of the audience right before intermission. I missed the stairs and the costumes during Masquerade, including the Phantom's dramatic costume and entrance. I missed the Phantom taking Christine down the ramps, for lack of a better word, into his lair and the candelabras that rose from the floor. It lacked the drama and the feeling that has always been a part of every production. I was so disappointed that my son, who was seeing it for the first time, saw this production. I have seen Phantom in Toronto with Colm Wilkinson, three times on Broadway, and three times in Cleveland. If I came home and found my wife in bed with another man, I'd still be less pissed than I am now. Phantom's opening number in his lair is pathetic. The sound quality was worse than a high school musical. There are so many key things changed or removed from this play, it's not worth going to see if you have ANY memories of a real Phantom performance. If you want to see Vinnie Barbarino play Phantom in high school, this is the play for you. They were 5 feet apart when Phantom says, "turn your head away.". NO boat on the lake, no rising chandeliers. NO EMOTION! For God's sake this is a love story. Has the director never seen Phantom? Do the actors not know the words? We do damnit and we know each inflection on every word.

The chandilier rising from the stage, the boat ride and song as Huge changes in the set and outright leaving parts out that made the original show so magicial. Songs shortened, lyrics changed, at times humorĪnd playful nature of the actors minimized. At intermission we stood up and looked at each other with the gaze of what has just happened. My wife and I have seen Phantom 8 times in the past. Fans of the original production WILL be disappointedĪ HUGE LETDOWN FROM PREVIOUS SHOWS WE HAVE SEEN IN THE PAST The sets were smallĪnd cheap looking, they shortened many of the original breathtaking scenes. ZERO believable chemistry between the Phantom and Christine.
